Quotations — Identifying And Interpreting

For each of the following quotes, identify the speaker and the audience, if known, and identify the point of view that it represents. What is the significance of each passage — what does it tell us in the present about that past society? How is each passage a piece of evidence for understanding something about that society? In each case, a brief (c. 200 word) paragraph should suffice. Compile all your answers into a single document and send to the instructor via the Submit Assignment button.

1. “Loving union with wife and children

Is like the music of lutes.

That makes the harmony and happiness lasting.”

2. “For two days friends and relatives assisted in gathering enough food for the voyage. Taro, pig, breadfruit, and a large supply of water were put on board.”
