Discussion Topic: The Heart Transplant

This is what’s on the syllabus pertaining to the Discussion Topics for this class: You will find several topics already started for each week’s Forum. They are labeled according to their corresponding week. These questions are started by the instructor. They are to initiate discussions by starting a string of replies from participants. You are to “Reply” only to these types of questions. Do not start your own Discussion Topic.

Discussion Topic: The Heart Transplant

The hospital ethics committee was discussing an important and urgent  case. A donor heart had become available, but an extremely rare thing  had happened. Two heart-transplant candidates in the hospital were both  matches for the donor heart. One patient was known to the committee as  Mr. X, the other as Ms. Y.

For someone with heart failure, Mr. X had been on the transplant  waiting list a long time. He had been waiting one year and was near  death. Ms. Y had just been placed on the list and could be sustained  with medication for quite some time, possibly until another heart became available. The answer seemed obvious-give the heart to Mr. X.

A number of the members of the committee did not agree with this  answer. They argued that time on the transplant list should be only one  factor considered. They saw a problem in Mr. X’s medical record.

Mr. X was 64 years old and had suffered from a heart condition for  years. He had had two angioplasties and two bypass operations to correct a blockage of the heart’s blood vessels. The problem seen by some  committee members was that Mr. X still smoked, ate fatty foods, and was  very overweight. After each procedure, doctors had warned Mr. X that he  must change his life-style, and that if he didn’t, his condition would  worsen. He never stopped smoking, however, and never changed his diet.  He said it was too hard.

Research has proven that smoking and high cholesterol are risk  factors for heart problems. Blockage of the coronary arteries is  directly attributed to these two factors. Treatments such as angioplasty (opening the blood vessels by passing a tube into the arteries) and  bypass surgery (connecting new blood vessels that go around the clogged  ones) can correct the problem, but they are not a total cure. To avoid  further problems, patients must control their diet, stop smoking, and  alleviate stress. This, of course, is not easy. Mr. X appeared not even  to try.

The heart was about to be airlifted to the hospital. The committee had to make their decision very soon.

1. What should the committee do?

2. How would you vote if you were on the committee?

(200-word minimum for each question please)

Write a leader guidebook of best practices for new supervisors in your current organization or an organization with which you are familiar, based on the new science realities.

This assignment provides you the opportunity to demonstrate a solid theory of leadership in a practical application that you can use in your organization.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

  • Competency 1: Analyze the art and science of leadership.
    • Write a leader guidebook of best practices that reflect the new science realities.
    • Describe how the new science guidelines impact the success of an enterprise.
  • Competency 3: Create an effective theory of leadership.
    • Describe behaviors of effective leaders.

Imagine it is your job to write a leader guidebook for new supervisors in your current organization or an organization with which you are familiar, based on the new science realities. Your guide should include the following:

  • Descriptions of effective best practices and day-to-day behaviors that leaders should follow for planning, measuring, motivating people, managing change and information, designing jobs, and encouraging relationships.
  • Descriptions of ineffective practices that leaders should avoid in order to be successful.
  • Explanation of the importance and implications of these new science guidelines to the success of the enterprise.

herpetological literature

Students will review current (≤2 yr old) papers from the herpetological literature. The topic is your choice, but the paper must (1) concern some aspect of the biology of amphibians and/or reptiles, (2) be original research (not a review paper), and (3) be published in a peer-reviewed journal (i.e., no magazines or Internet news sources).  The review should be typed, double-spaced, 1–2-page (2.5-cm margins and 12-point font) synopsis of the entire article written in layperson terms so the information is accessible to a general audience (as if you were a science reporter writing for a newspaper). Please include a photocopy of the abstract of the paper you review. Do not include a cover page.

expository essay,

For your writing scenario in this module, the editor of the student magazine has reviewed your draft and sees potential for an audience in your profession or field. Although you may have used general sources in your expository essay in Module 2, the editor now requires sources that are more appropriate for you major or intended field. Such sources need to be credible, relevant, and recent. Excelsior College relies on the Written Communication VALUE Rubric for assessment of writing in our capstones. VALUE also may provide the basis for assignment grading criteria. An important focus is on Sources and Evidence. The highest level of achievement on VALUE for Sources and Evidence is the following: The paper demonstrates skillful use of high quality, credible, relevant sources to develop ideas that are appropriate for the discipline and genre of the writing.

For this activity, you will locate two additional sources related to your topic or thesis for your field. You will create an annotated bibliography with entries that are well organized and include consistently strong summaries of the sources. You will also evaluate each source, and ensure you have clear and correct critiques of each source.

As you work on your final draft of your expository essay, you will incorporate these sources into your paper. You may find that, after reading sources in your field, you need to adjust your topic and thesis.

Before completing this assignment, be sure to review the information on annotated bibliographies from the Excelsior College OWLlocated at:

Excelsior College Online Writing Lab. (n.d.). Annotated bibliographies (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Retrieved from http://owl.excelsior.edu/research-and-citations/annotated-bibliographies/

As you read each of the two sources required for this assignment, make sure to record all the necessary information about the source, name of the journal, book, database, publication and retrieval date, and page numbers.

Required elements:

  1. Annotations for at least two sources.
  2. Two sources must be from the library databases.
  3. Each source must be followed by a one-paragraph summary of the source and then a one- or two-sentence evaluation of the article focusing on the credibility and helpfulness of each source.

You will submit the citations for your sources in proper format (APA) for your discipline. Here is an example of a properly formatted APA journal citation:

Structure And Functions Of Organs Paper

Identify an organism that lives within 50 miles of your home.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper about how the organism has adapted to survive in their specific environment. Include the following points in your paper:

  • Briefly describe the environment (temperature, landscape, food sources, etc.) and describe the organism’s role in the environment. Determine which organism your chosen organism would be most closely related to using a phylogenetic tree.
  • Identify the structures and functions of the main organs found in your selected organism.
  • Explain how the organism has evolved physiologically to become suited to its environment.
  • Explain how things would change if the organism were to be transplanted to a significantly different environment:
  • Would their organ system still be as efficient? Why or why not?
  • Would the organism survive in this new environment? Why or why not?

Include the diagram and other appropriate pictures in your paper and make sure to provide a full reference for the images in your reference section.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines including references and in-text citations. Your paper should include a well written introduction and conclusion. Use only academic research sources.
